Custom Billet Grilles and Mesh Grilles from T-REX

MyTightRide.com (Anaheim, CA) and T-REX Custom Grilles (Corona, CA) have teamed up to dominate the market with top-quality billet grilles and mesh grilles for many late-model cars, trucks and SUV’s. T-REX has chosen MyTightRide.com to be one of their top retailers based on peak sales records and MyTightRide’s superior customer service.

Custom Aftermarket Billet Grille for the Nissan 350Z The automotive billet grille and mesh grille market sales have increased exponentially in the last ten years. This popularity is due to the demand of car and truck owners to differentiate their own “ride” from all the other vehicles on the road. Most auto manufacturers produce vehicles with very dull front- ends. Take a look around and notice all the cars on the road with huge, empty black holes in the front. By adding a custom aftermarket billet grille or mesh grille, that vehicle will stand out beyond the rest of the crowd. And, one of the most recognized names in the billet grille and mesh grill industry is T-REX Custom Grilles.
T-REX specializes in billet grilles made from quality aircraft grade aluminum. Only the best materials are used in every T-REX product. All T-REX custom grilles are made here in the USA. Each grille model is first test fitted at least three times to check for best fit on every installation. All billet grilles come with easy to follow step by step instructions and illustrations. And, if you have a question regarding an install, you can contact MyTightRide or T-REX for assistance.
T-REX also specializes in their popular mesh grille designs. Since their introduction, T-REX mesh grilles have risen to the top of popularity with their unique designs and superior quality. Hundreds of mesh grille designs are available for many late-model cars, trucks and SUV’s.
T-REX also offers their high-line X-Metal mesh grille designs for many late-model trucks and SUV’s. The X-Metal grille line offers the buyer an exceptionally tough look to the front of their truck. The X-Metal grille line is intended to compete with other high-end billet and mesh grille manufacturers.
Finally, the Dresden line of mesh grilles is T-REX’s latest offering in the automotive grille market. The Dresden line of grilles is marketed to the more sophisticated demographic of European luxury vehicles such as BMW and Mercedes. This new line of grilles will also include vehicles such as the Cadillac Escalade, Chrysler 300 and Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

Ford F150 XLT 2009-2011 Billet Grille Install

Billet Grille Install “Brain Dump” –

Ford F150 2009, 2010 and 2011 Billet Grille Installation

2009-2011 F150 Billet Grille, Upper Billet Grille Insert and Lower Billet Bumper Insert

Today we installed a full billet grille and bumper billet grille on our 2009 XLT SuperCrew. It went pretty good thanks to the help of my assistant, Chuck K. If you have any questions about this install, give him a call at our shop (714) 956-3801.  Click here to check out our full line of 2009-2011 F150 Billet Grilles and Mesh Grilles.

2009 2010 2011 F150 Billet Grille Insert
Our 2007 F150 SuperCrew was a bit easier to work with than this new 2009 F150 body style. Our 2007 F150 grille came off real easy. This 2009 F150 was a bit more work to remove from the vehicle. Make sure you have plenty of protection especially eye protection since you’ll be doing a lot of grinding. This install was not the easiest since it took us about an hour and a half, but when we were done, it was well worth the effort. This billet grille looks sweet on the truck and WAY better than the factory grille!

2009-2010-2011 Ford F150 Billet Grille Inserts - slso shown with halo projector headlight replacements
The 2009-up F150 models, they stick five retainer clips in the top part of the front grille…just under the main strip of chrome. These clips attach to the tip of the hood and require very careful removal so the plastic retainers don’t break. I’ll try and illustrate as I continue…after we removed the (I think) six 10mm bolts from across the grille and the two at the bottom of the support bracket, we could not get the grille off. We finally discovered the 5 retaining pieces that were hidden under the top of the grille. I don’t know how Ford expected you to remove the grille. If I were to go back and do it again, I’d say to use a screwdriver wrapped with a towel to somehow gently pry off the grille from the hood. I really don’t have a good suggestion how to do this. We had to rock the grille back and forth and pull on it to get it to separate from the hood. In the process, we broke three of the retainer clips. Fortunately, when we put it all together and tightened everything down, the busted clips didn’t make much of a difference.  Once the grille shell is removed from our F150, we took it over to our carpeted workbench. The carpet on the workbench helps keep the chrome grille shell from getting scratched. We turned the grille on its face down on the workbench in an attempt to figure out how to remove all the black center pieces. We just started cutting at the black plastic beams. Twice, our grinder cut into the outer chrome shell. Do be careful when cutting to avoid flying debris, cutting the wrong frame and shell pieces, the chrome housing and of course…yourself! The directions say to mask off the chrome outer shell, but masking tape would not have helped us today. The grinder would have cut thru the masking tape and into the shell. So, our recommendation is to go s-l-o-w when cutting on the frame and innards of the grille.

There are a few places we don’t recommend you cut. We’ll post pictures of those places. However, once we installed the billet grille into our gaping shell, the mistakes we made cutting seemed to not matter.

There is a long black retainer bar that runs along the bottom of the grille shell. We recommend you remove that and leave it off until you’ve installed the new billet grille. When you’re finished installing the grille, then reinstall the black bar.

Grinding – we cut parts of the black inside frame out small pieces at a time until we figured out what parts needed to come out altogether. Again, use caution not to remove too much material since the aftermarket billet grille requires some of the black plastic frame for mounting back onto the hood of the F150.

Once most of the black frame is removed, the chrome outer bars had to be removed (bars that run top to bottom). We started grinding from the center and worked our way to the outer part of the frame. We couldn’t get our grinding wheel in far enough to make a good cut so we had to start grinding from the middle and work toward the outside. Once most of the chrome frame was removed, we could work from the inside of the grille to trim down the chrome parts flat using the tip of the grinder.

With the frame out of the way, we could start the billet installation procedure. We test fitted the new billet into the housing to determine how it sat inside the grille shell. The initial fitting showed that the grille tabs needed to be bent slightly so they would sit flush with the grille shell. Once the new billet grille was in place, we took our electric drill and drilled a small pilot hole for each of the screws to tap into. The hardware kit came with those U-shaped screw retainers, but some of the screws didn’t have anyplace where we could attach it to the screw. You may want to consider purchasing two of the same size screws, but about a ½ inch longer….some of the screws are too short and will not grab onto the retainers that come with the kit.

Once the pilot holes were drilled, we placed the billet grille inside the grille shell and screwed a few of the screws into the billet. We were not happy with the location of the billet grille so we removed the screws and drilled a few new pilot holes.

With the billet grille in place and a few screws holding it into place, we put the remaining screws into the grille and tightened everything down snug. Two or three of the screws did not tap into the plastic grille shell. They just sat there keeping the billet grille in the shell by lying against the shell, but didn’t have anything to grab into. This weekend, I’m going remove the grille again and put some sort of small brackets into these areas to make sure the billet grille is on the shell tight. This is why I say earlier to make sure you don’t cut off too much of the black plastic frame or the screws won’t have anything to screw into when installing the billet grille.

Once the billet grille was firmly anchored in the grille shell, we put the black retainer bar back onto the grille shell and tightened down the bolts onto the bar. At this time, we cleaned up the finger prints, bugs and road grime off the grille shell and stood back to check out our handiwork! Looked pretty sweet!

Now, we installed the shell back onto the F150. Some of the top clips were still in place so we pressed on the grille shell onto the hood. We put all the bolts back into the outer frame of the shell and the two that went onto the brackets and tightened everything down. If I remember, three of the clips along the top of the grille shell on the passenger side were broken. That had us worried it wouldn’t stay flush with the hood. However, after the install was complete, the shell did stay flush.

The aftermarket bumper billet grille was a piece of cake. We had to remove the license plate mounting housing to install the bumper billet grille. To remove the housing, you have to press in four one-way plastic retainer clips…then it will come off. The bottom of the billet grille slides into two slots where the license plate housing once sat. The top of the billet grille bolts into the top of the license plate bracket. The billet grille hardware kit came with two bolts, four large washers and two lock nuts. We used all those items to securely attach the bumper billet grille to our F150. The time to remove the license plate housing and install the bumper billet grille was about five minutes. Wished all our installs were this easy!

Again, if you have any questions about this install, please call us at (714) 956-3801 or stop by our shop at 828 W. Vermont Avenue, Anaheim, California. We’re in the Coast Corvette building at the opposite end from the Corvette shop.  Click here to check out our full line of 2009-2011 F150 Billet Grilles and Mesh Grilles.

Custom After Market Projector Headlights

Custom Aftermarket Projector Headlights for cars, trucks and SUV's

Picture of custom automotive angel eye projector headlights with dual lighted halos

Projectors headlights originated in Germany about twenty years ago. It was technology taken from racing vehicles driven at night. The projector headlight technology started seeing common roads on many upper-class vehicles such as the BMW. BMW wanted to produce a headlight that would focus the light directly in front of the car instead of on the sides of the road and into the sky which standard parabolic headlights do. It was important to have the maximum amount of light in front of the vehicle when traveling at speeds over 150 kilometers/hour. Shortly thereafter, Japan expanded on the projector headlight technology and used it on a few Lexus vehicles. Now, projector headlights are seen on most new vehicles (foreign & domestic) built today including many high-end SUV’s. Aftermarket automotive projector headlights are becoming more mainstream opposed to the previous parabolic headlights used in the 1980’s & 1990’s. Again, the purpose of the projector headlight is to focus the beam of light in front of the vehicle instead of all over the highway…in areas where lighting isn’t really necessary. California considering electronic license plates

How can a state with a whopping $19 million budget deficit scrape up some more cash? In our consumerist society minds often turn to selling ad space. Would you believe California is currently considering digital license plates that can display advertising? It's true -- the California state senate actually passed a resolution to look into it and a few companies are already working on producing prototypes. When the vehicle is in motion, the plate would display the license number. Any time the vehicle stops for four seconds or more, an ad would appear. The plate number would still be visible somewhere while the ad shows. The government could also use the e-plates to broadcast Amber Alerts or emergency info.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is pretty outraged by this. Though it may be a legitimate moneymaker, hit the jump to see just a few reasons it's still a terrible idea.

1. Hackers. Actually, I've always dreamed of having a digital license plate. Not for showing ads -- to change or black out my plate number at will James Bond-style, or maybe to tell the driver behind me that I can totally see him picking his nose. (I'm talking to you, white Subaru Legacy wagon driver on the 405 last night.) With an audience as large as California's network of roads and car thieves aplenty, you can bet there will be an army of hackers trying to get in.

2. Glitches. A bunch of pixels on your plate burn out. The plate number doesn't come back up when the car starts moving again. The government's ad-broadcasting system crashes. You get the idea.

3. General backlash. Personally, I don't want any vehicle I drive to advertise for Walmart or McDonalds. I don't patronize either, and wouldn't encourage others to. No one should have to run ads that represent business practices or beliefs they may not agree with. Offering drivers the ability to choose their ad preferences and sorting out those specific transmissions sounds like a logistical nightmare. Further, the government would be running ads on our personal property, yet we wouldn't necessarily get fair compensation for it. With such a huge deficit to make up, I doubt the state would waive license fees.

What do you think of the digital license plate idea?

Bright H.I.D. Headlight Bulbs for your car, truck or SUV

Bright H.I.D. Headlight Bulb Kits

You've heard of projector headlights but what's all this noise about bright HID lighting? I see more and more vehicles on the road with HID headlights. Many new vehicles come with HID lighting from the factory. Why HID ?

Automotive Aftermarket HID lighting 9008, 9007, 9006, 9005, 9004, 9003, H3, H1,

HID versus halogen: High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting technology replaces the filament of the light bulb with a capsule of gas. The light is emitted from an arc discharge between two closely spaced electrodes sealed inside a small capsule. This arc is similar to the light of an arc welder. To operate, each HID bulb requires individual ballasts, which supply proper voltage and meter current. The amount of light emitted from the HID lighting system is far greater than a standard halogen bulb. While, at the same time, consuming less power.

Color of HID lighting & Kelvin: Kelvin (K) in relation to HID is the color temperature of light. That light color is on a spectrum that varies from 3,300k to 12,000k. Starting on the left, 3,300k is the color temperature of OEM halogen bulbs. 3,300k is kind of a yellowish color. The next step up would be 4,300k. 4,300k is the equivalent of sunlight. This will be the brightest and whitest color available with an HID lighting system. If you are looking for strictly the brightest bulbs on the market, go with 4,300k. Next is 6,000k. 6,000k has a tint of blue and will be similar to many Infiniti/Nissan factory HID bulbs. 8,000k will be bluer than 6,000k and is similar to many factory BMW and Mercedes HID bulbs. 10,000k and 12,000k will shine a purple light. Although we have those colors available, we don't recommend it. Try and drive at night behind a purple light. Not real easy. These HID kits are more for show.

There is a misconception that color temperature is a rating of the brightness of the HID bulb. The truth is that the higher the color temperature, the less light output from the HID bulb. Again, if you're looking for the maximum amount of light from your HID kit, choose the 4,300k bulb. 4,300k bulbs will have the highest lumens output of any HID system.

What is Lumens? Lumens in relation to HID is the intensity of light. In comparison to OEM halogen bulbs, HID bulbs are on average three to five times brighter. The lumens of an HID bulb will be two to three times greater than the lumens of an OEM automotive halogen bulb. You could compare the power and intensity of HID with a welder's arc. Same principle and same type of light. Instead of a halogen bulb using a filament to create the light source, HID uses gas-filled capsule and an electric arc to create the light. This arc of light is far more intense than the filament of a halogen filament bulb.

More light = more power requirements This is not true with HID bulbs. The HID kit will produce approximately 23,000 volts. Although a huge amount of power, the HID system will only draw 35 watts of current. The standard OEM halogen bulb will consume 55 watts of power. Therefore the HID system will draw far less current from your vehicle's electrical system. The power conversion is achieved with the use of a ballast. Like a florescent home lighting system, the florescent ballast generates more electricity for the bulb but consumes less electricity in comparison to a standard incandescent bulb.

MyTightRide.com carries many popular types of bright HID headlights systems. They also carry the Bi-xenon HID bulbs for those headlight systems with combined high beam & low beam bulbs.

Google joins OnStar in Chevy Volt

Projector headlights shine the way and billet grilles let you arive in style but how's you're navigation?

-----

It would be easy to assume that Ford is the only domestic automaker really making waves with mobile connectivity. What with Sync and AppLink, Ford's staked its claim in the easy-to-use mobile integration arena. GM's ready to address that head-on though, with a newly announced partnership with search mega-giant, Google.

At the beginning of the year, Chevrolet announced development of mobile apps for Google's Android Smartphone operating system to use with the upcoming Volt. It's now been taken one step further by integrating Google's impressive turn-by-turn navigation with OnStar. Hit the jump to learn how it works.

It all seems pretty simple, really. The user launches the Volt app on his or her Android Smartphone, and can search or input an address in the "navigation" tab. The user can then send the destination to their Volt to be guided by OnStar when embarking on their journey.

Another neat feature is that the app will keep track of your Volt, and upon launching, can show where the user is in relation to their Volt. This makes getting lost in giant parking lots a thing of the past. Along with navigation is the afore mentioned charge status and vehicle status updates of the Volt App.

Review of the 2010 Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra is a true original, and a successful original at that. The Xterra is a sport utility vehicle engineered for serious off-road sport and real utility over suburban shopping duty. It is a truck SUV, not a crossover SUV. Its body is attached to a boxed-in steel ladder frame, and it rides on the same rugged suspension as the Nissan Frontier pickup, with double wishbones up front and a solid axle on leaf springs in the rear...Continue reading

Ford EcoBoost owners love their turbochargers

Ford EcoBoost owners love their turbochargers
Ford's big push lately had been to replace larger, less fuel efficient engines with smaller, turbocharged, more fuel efficient engines with the same horsepower. I'm referring to Ford's EcoBoost line of engines, which debuted in Taurus SHO, Lincoln MKS, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT. Considering my love of torque and larger V8's (insert Tim Allen barking now), I was pretty skeptical. However, looks like current EcoBoost owners don't share my concern.

A recent quality study, conducted by RDA Group of Bloomfield Hills, MI, has shown that owners of the 10,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles sold are overwhelmingly satisfied with their boosted engines. This pleases Ford, who says that not only are consumers satisfied, but they're younger and more affluent than before. Many of those consumers are even past import buyers.

If you had told me 5 years ago that smaller turbocharged motors would take-off, I would have called you crazy. Granted, 5 years ago the average price of regular unleaded was just under 2 bucks a gallon, it's a sign that the times are a changin'. Ford is rapidly ramping up EcoBoost adoption (it's promised a 4-cylinder in the F-150 and new Edge and Explorer), and it looks like it may be onto something. Hey Ford, how about you toss one of those the Fiesta's way?
